One day before the ‘big match’ against Chelsea, 7 May 2011 at 6 pm, all the first team of MANCHESTER UNITED gathered on the club’s home ground for a special occasion: the launching ceremony of KING POWER RED DEVIL, the third edition of the official Manchester United timepiece by Swiss luxury watchmaker, HUBLOT. This is to pay homage to the legendary football club – founded in 1878, having won 19 league titles, four League Cups, a record 11 FA Cups, and three UEFA Champions League trophies, as well as highlighting the committed partnership between Manchester United and Hublot since 2008. At the hallowed turf of Old Trafford, Jean Claude-Biver, the CEO of Hublot Company presented the watches to Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Javier “Chicarito” Hernandez, Dimitar Berbatov, Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic, Michael Owen, Edwin Van Der Sar, Park Ji Sung and others.

What’s new?

Distinguished from the previous versions, the new series includes the real blades of grass from Old Trafford in its design. Picked and preserved by the club’s grounds-men especially for making this limited edition watches, the grass were stabilized by Hublot for six months. The long development process was to maintain the grasses’ original color as well as protect them against UV and temperature differences. The freeze-dried blades of grass were then inserted into the indexes through an all-new way before they were coated with a special transparent lacquer to secure them permanently. The natural grass-green-colored indexes are the focal point of the timepiece as well as to mark the Old Trafford’s more than one hundred year-old turf (the Theatre of Dreams – scene of so many victories, so much thrill and effort – has been the United’s permanent residence since1910).

Likewise, distinguished from other same model of King Power, this Hublot Manchester United 3rd Edition Watch is equipped for the first time with two centre chrono hands: one indicates the seconds while another – specially developed for football (soccer) – indicates the time elapsed out of the 45 minutes in each half. This new design of King Power’s chronograph movement provides better readability – quicker and more efficient, allowing the wearer to keep track of both hands at a glance.

The revamped designs on King Power model also includes its two push-buttons which are now protected by a little safety bar in either side of the crown. Also, in a final reference to the legendary club and bringing a last aesthetic touch to the piece, the black rubber strap has a red line in the centre, directly inspired by Manchester United’s graphic charter.

The new RM 016 DLC TITANIUM ARGENTINA is characterized by the color of Argentina’s flag: light blue on its numerals, indications, and hands. You may recall the Hyundai Cameraphone Watch we reported on in October. Well this isn't it. But it is a cell phone watch. Available from ThinkGeek now for $200, it's an unlocked GSM cell phone and PDA all stuffed into a package you wear on your wrist. You'll need service with AT&T/Cingular or T-Mobile for the little guy to work (sorry for now Verizon and Sprint users) and it comes with ~~a whopping~~ 60MB of built in storage. I was considering one, but I had the guy that runs the clinic out the back of a Chinese restaurant install a cell phone in my brain. Unfortunately, I think some stray lo mien made its way in there as well. I'm thinking with noodles, man!

OLED "Star" Watch, Looks Good, I Want One

The OLED TIWE (like TIME, but with the M upside down!) watch by industrial designer Lv Zhogfang is a neat concept. It normally displays a bunch of little white balls ("stars") randomly floating around the face. But when you give it a shake or tap on the glass, PRESTO! -- the balls come together to show the time! While still in the early stages of development, it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to manufacture. And if they're not too expensive I'd get one. It's definitely a step up from the "shake activated" watch I have now. When you shake mine the minute and hour hands come off and float around inside. It would be cool if that was supposed to happen, but it's not. Stupid Folex.

I Will Sadly Never Own A Vulcania Watch

This is the Vulcania watch and it looks awesome. Designed by Fabrice Gonet and manufactured by HD3 Complication, it's got just the look I want in a watch. Which is a look that makes it a hassle to read the time and with some timebomb styling thrown in for good measure.

Each aspect of the time is viewed in its own unique way. The hours has a Price is Right style rotating wheel and the minutes are viewed on a circular dial. A small window will also display the current date. Sapphire glass panels on the front and back and side port holes allow for all of the steampunk-y innards to be viewed.

The watch will be unveiled this April and there will only be 11 made. Meaning they'll be ungodly expensive. I'd tell you how much they cost, but it doesn't matter because I purchased them all already. And I'm going to destroy all of them except one. What good is a badass watch if you know there are 10 other assholes out there with the exact same one?

Reflection Watch Features Mirror, The Time

The Reflection watch costs $159. For that money you get a mirror you wear on your wrist that transforms into a watch with bright red LEDs when you push a button. To me it looks a lot like a men's watch, which seems to be the wrong demographic for such a device. I mean, I don't need a damn mirror -- I know I'm fugly. My girlfriend always carries a compact with her and uses it frequently, because she feels she needs to look good all the time. Me? I always look like I got drunk and passed out in a ditch the night before -- which I usually have. But you don't see me checking the mirror. I look like I got hit by a bus and I know it. Just like I know I smell like shit. But you know what, f*** deodorant, it's unnatural.

The heavy casing is fixed to the strap (or rather the other way round) by means of a special articulated system which makes it possible to turn the watch over without taking it off the wrist. Thus, according to your mood, you can flash your tourbillon set in a hi-tech environment or display the lunar phases from a big, gold moon that has been recreated in detail from its original in the sky. But that’s not all. Since Christophe Claret is the generally recognized expert on striking clocks, the Opus 4 is equipped with a minute device to repeat the deep ‘cathedral’ sound that makes this model the most complex and possibly the most expensive on the list.

Even without a tourbillon, the EI Primero calibre ensures the extreme precision of this watch. Its mechanism completes 36,000 half-oscillations an hour, which is considerably more than the standard norm of 18,000 to 28,800 vibrations. The Zenith designers – including the president of the company, Thierry Natafe – have done a brilliant job. The pros and the cons of such an asymmetrical configuration on the watch face may long be argued over, but no one can deny its author’s originality.

We found the patented design for the date display, the rim of which revolves around the tourbillon window in an opposite direction to the carriage, particularly interesting.

The model’s only shortcoming is its high energy consumption, giving it a relatively small reserve of movement – a total of 50 hours.

The Flying Tourbillon with the letter P on its carriage was first shown to the public a little more than a year ago, and this is now a new premiere. The skeletonized rectangle of the new Emperador Skeleton Tourbillon is decorated with 42 titanium parts, weighing a total of 0.2 grams. The mechanism is no more than 3.5mm thick – and so far nothing slimmer has been built. Basically, the Emperador Skeleton Tourbillon recalls an artistic miniature in the abstract art deco style. And you can spend an unconscionably long time trying to understand the purpose of the representation, and read into it whatever you like – except that it is actually a watch-face.

An original approach to a miracle – dated 2004. This particular miracle is a 30?second tourbillon of the company’s own manufacture set in a cushioned casing. The doubled speed of the carriage ensures that the mechanism runs more smoothly. A pleasant addition to the ‘royal’ function is the sound, eight-day running reserve, the display of which is located near the figure 12. The watch has only been produced in a limited (the manufacturers do not give an exact figure) number in pink gold and platinum.

The new version of the Tourbillon with a gold bridge is noticeable for its laconic design: three figures, two hands and one tourbillon. It consists, incidentally, of 72 parts and weighs 0.3 grams. The image is completed with its barrel-shaped body of pink gold on a small, crocodile skin strap. Everything is seemingly on show, but everything is aristocratic to the highest degree.

It is an established fact that the founder of the John Arnold Company enjoyed a friendly relationship with Abraham-Louis Breguet and frequently exchanged watchmaking secrets with him. And there was quite a bit to exchange: during the latter part of the 18th and the early part of the 19th centuries, England was the world centre of mechanics including watch mechanics. In 1808, the Swiss watchmaker installed a tourbillon into a watch made by Arnold and gave it to the latter’s son as a gift with the inscription: “In tribute to the memory of Arnold from Breguet”. Two hundred years later, those who continue the work of Arnold & Son have decided to pay back the debt of honour by creating an impressive looking model with a tourbillon that shows the time simultaneously in three time zones. The watch is in a solid British style ornamented with flowering Alpine edelweiss.

Fifty five models only of this watch have been made: twenty five in yellow gold; ten each in white gold and platinum; and five skeletons in pink gold and in platinum.

Breguet Classique Grand Complication

The hour hand turns on a supplementary face above; the minute hand is in the centre; and the second hand is threaded to the tourbillon pivot. This is approximately what the first tourbillon regulator watches looked like. The whole thing frequently included a cover with an opening for the face that chastely concealed all the expensive beauty beneath. Breguet, incidentally, still produces these classical models. To describe perfection of this kind – is the same as trying to describe the smile on the face of the Mona Lisa.
